How Can I Lose Weight Like a Model?
Models are everywhere. They grace our magazines, and our laptops and influence the clothes we buy and the foods we eat. They inspire us to be our best selves and look the way we want to look. And they pull it off so…effortlessly. Or so it seems.
But, just like all of us, models have to work to look the way they do. Sure, many of them may be genetically predisposed to having a different body type than the rest of us. And they may have photographers and stylists and makeup artists that can create magic that our normal cameras and closets can’t.
But – there is also work that models must put in every day to look the way they do. Modeling is a cutthroat business and for every supermodel, there is a person struggling just to make ends meet.
Like many industries, models have to work hard to be in their best shape, physically and mentally. And knowing what that work entails can benefit us as we move along our own journey to weight loss and being our best selves.
If you want to lose weight like a model, focus on the following. You may not be able to make yourself taller, but you can certainly benefit from these model-proven tips.
Focus on Your Foods - All of Them
We hear the stories of the stick-thin models who supposedly live off of french fries and soft drinks and somehow stay skinny enough to grace the covers of every magazine at the grocery store. But let’s be honest, few people can really look like Victoria's Secret model and live that way.
If you want to look like a model, you will probably not be able to live off a diet that consists of processed or fast food for long. Most models, when asked, admit to following a very regimented diet, where things like french fries and cheesecake are the exception, not the norm.
A diet that will give you the same shape as a model should consist of a lot of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Eating these types of foods will help you lose the weight you want as well as make it easier to keep it off.
There are also foods you should avoid. Consuming too much processed food, like cookies, chips and other snack foods will keep bulk around your middle. Drinking sodas or alcohol fill your system with empty calories that don’t provide you with any nutrients (and can oftentimes make you hungrier.)
Models also are big proponents of drinking plenty of water to help keep you hydrated and flush unwanted toxins from your body (and skin). Water also has the tendency to make you feel fuller. In fact, next time you’re feeling hungry, try downing a glass of water first. It may be hydration that your body needs, not calories.
Another good rule of thumb when it comes to the foods you should eat if you want to lose weight like a model is to try and limit your portions, regardless of what you eat, and try to eat more frequently. This means to have 5 to 6 meals a day, but keep the caloric intake of each of those meals to around 200 to 300 calories each. This will make it easier for your body to process and burn those calories effectively.
Most models also believe in moderation. Yes, you can have the occasional french fries, ice cream, or fast food. But eat these foods in moderation and know that when you reach for these instead of something healthy, they are a treat and a cheat, not real nutrition.
Commit to a Regular Exercise Routine
Of course, there are going to be those models who don’t ever admit to breaking a sweat. But again, like junk food, most models will tell you that not exercising and staying svelte is just not possible to obtain for the long term.
Standing around and having your picture taken all day long may look like a breeze. But if you’ve never tried it, think again. A model has to have stamina, muscle strength, and excellent posture in order to be able to endure hours of photo shoots. Look more closely at some of your favorite model shoots and you will see that they are taken outdoors, in harsh lighting conditions, or in interesting locations. That one photo can sometimes take several hours to get right and a model has to have the endurance to last until the last click of the camera.
If you want to get your body in top condition like a model, you will need to find a workout that focuses on your core strength, your flexibility, and your muscles. Building a long, lean body is possible, but it will take determination, discipline, and the right activities to do so.
High-intensity interval training, weight lifting, and cardiovascular exercises like running, biking, and aerobic classes are all forms of exercise models employ to get the shape they want and burn the calories they need to stay at their best weight. Finding an exercise program that burns fat and increases your lean muscle mass is ideal if you want to emulate a model’s workout regime.
It’s also important to find an exercise program that you can stick to. There’s no point in getting a membership to the fancy gym if you’re never going to go, or buying a high-end bicycle if you aren’t going to ride it. To lose weight like a model (or anyone who maintains a good shape) you must have consistency in your workouts and be able to commit to doing them often.
Know How to Say No
Finally, regardless of what you eat or how much you work out, this tip may be the one that is going to help you lose weight like a model more than any other.
Knowing when to say no is perhaps the one strategy every successful model has incorporated into their lifestyle and weight maintenance plan. Whether it’s saying no to a certain food, a wild night out, another drink, or a cheat day, models have to be disciplined in order to maintain their busy schedules, their constant demands, and the rigors of their lifestyle.
Many of us like to imagine that the life of a model is glitzy and glamorous, but most models will tell you that isn’t always the case. The days can be long and grueling and the jobs can be inconsistent. Therefore, a true professional, dedicated model will know how to best take care of her body to ensure that work continues to come her way. Learning to say no to outside influences is an important part of that dedication.
