Whether you’re an avid sport fisherman or dabble in weekend fishing trips, the fascination for catching bass is always a thrill. But wherever you go fishing, there are always rules you need to follow. Depending on if it’s a State-owned lake reserve or private fishing pond you can only take so many Bass with you. This is called a limit, more precisely a creel limit.

This is the exact number of fish you can take home with you that you legally caught. All across the US, there are different bass limits to what can be caught. They depend of length of the bass and in daily catches, only one can be over the set length allowed. The breed of the bass is also factored into that likewise. We’ve done our research and assembled the most comprehensive list is bass fishing limits across all 50 states!

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 10 bass
  • White bass – 15 bass
  • Yellow bass – 15 bass

Alaska

No bass fish at all.

Arizona

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bass – 6 bass (any size combination)
  • Striped bass – 10 bass (any size)
  • White bass – unlimited bass
  • Yellow bass – unlimited bass
  • Community fishing programs- (minimum size 13″) 2 bass from lakes, 1 bass from the pond

Arkansas

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 10 bass (largemouth, spotted, smallmouth combined)
  • Smallmouth bass – 4 bass (Ozark zone is 12” otherwise only 10”)
  • Rock bass – 10 bass (Ozark bass, shadow bass, or combined)
  • Striped bass – 6 bass (hybrid stripers and striped bass that are combined)
  • White bass – 25 bass (per day)
  • Yellow bass – unlimited bass

California

The daily limit of bass fish per person

Black bass (including bigmouth and smallmouth bass)

  • Colorado River District- 6 bass
  • Inyo County – Lassen County – Mono County – Plumas County – Shasta County – 5 bass
  • Big Lake (Shasta County) – 5 bass (last Saturday of April – Nov 15) – 0 (Nov 16- last Friday of April)
  • Casitas Lake (Ventura County) – Castaic Lake (Los Angeles County) – 5 bass
  • Cuyamaca (San Diego County) – Diamond Valley Lake (Riverside County) – 5 bass

  • Bass (hybrid striped- wiper) 10 bass (Except in South Fork of the Republican River drainages) – 20 bass
  • Largemouth bass – 5 bass
  • Smallmouth bass – 5 bass
  • Spotted bass – 5 bass
  • Striped bass – 10 bass (Except in South Fork of the Republican River drainages) – 20 bass
  • White bass – 10 bass (Except in South Fork of the Republican River drainages) – 20 bass

Connecticut

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 6 bass (12” minimum length)
  • Smallmouth bass – 6 bass (12” minimum length)
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (28” minimum length)

Delaware

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black sea bass – 3 bass (16” minimum length)
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (catch and release only from April-May in spawning areas) 28-35” (20-25” July-Aug in Delaware Bay)
  • Largemouth bass – 6 bass (2 at 15” min from Becks Pond) otherwise 12” minimum length
  • Smallmouth bass – 6 bass (no more than one 17” with the rest measuring from 12-17” varied)
  • Striped bass hybrid (in Lums Pond) – 2 bass (minimum 15” minimum length)

Florida

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (may include Bigmouth bass, Suwannee, Choctaw and Shoal bass) with only one of them being 16” longer in length. No minimum length for Bigmouth bass.
  • Striped bass – 20 bass (only 6 shall be 24″ in total length) exceptions apply in the Suwannee river
  • White bass – 20 bass (only 6 shall be 24″ in total length) exceptions apply in the Suwannee river
  • Sunshine bass – 20 bass (only 6 shall be 24″ in total length) exceptions apply in the Suwannee river
  • Butterfly peacock bass – 2 bass ( one can be 17″ or so in total length)

Georgia

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bass (including largemouth, smallmouth, redeye, shoal, spotted, or Suwannee) – 10 bass (only from Lake Lindsay Grace in Wayne County with only one of the bass can be longer than 22″)
  • Striped, white, hybrid white-striped – 15 bass (only one can be 22” or longer) Exception apply from river to river

Hawaii

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 10 bass (minimum 9”) Catch and release only
  • Smallmouth bass – 10 bass (minimum 9”) Catch and release only

Idaho

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 6 bass (in lakes and reservoirs) Rivers and streams have no creel limit
  • Smallmouth bass – 6 bass (in lakes and reservoirs) Rivers and streams have no creel limit

Illinois

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass - 6 bass (Golconda, Marina, Wabash rivers) with a minimum of 3 smallmouth
  • Smallmouth bass - 6 bass (Golconda, Marina, Wabash rivers)
  • Spotted bass - 6 bass (Golconda, Marina, Wabash rivers) with a minimum of 3 smallmouth
  • Striped bass - 25 bass (Exceptions apply from river to river)
  • White bass, Yellow bass, Hybrid bass - 25 bass (3 of which must be 17” in length, the rest has to be less than 17”) Exceptions apply from river to river

Indiana

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (up to 15” in lakes only), 5 bass (with two being up to 15” in rivers and streams), and 3 bass (up to 14” in Lake Michigan) May apply to largemouth, smallmouth and spotted. Total number of bass must contain mixed sizes

Iowa

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 3 bass (including bigmouth, smallmouth, and spotted with a 15” minimum) Exception will apply from various boundary lakes and rivers.
  • Yellow, white, rock bass, hybrid – unlimited (boundary rivers allow 25 bass in any variety)

Kansas

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (included bigmouth, smallmouth, and spotted up to 15” minimum)
  • Striped and wiper bass – 5 bass (no size limitations)

Kentucky

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 6 bass (bigmouth and smallmouth must be 12” minimum length) Kentucky and Coosa bass have no length limits.
  • Rock bass – 15 bass (no length limit)
  • White or hybrid bass – 15 bass (no length limit)
  • Striped bass – 5 bass (must be 15” maximum length)
  • Yellow bass – unlimited bass (no length limit)

Louisiana

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 8-10 bass (ranging from 12-19” total length across the state) Including bigmouth and spotted bass
  • Hybrid or striped bass – 5 bass (with no more than two over 30” maximum length)
  • Yellow bass – 50 bass (no length limit) Exceptions apply at Caddo Lake, Sabine River and Toledo Bend reservoir where the limit is 25 bass per day.
  • White bass – 50 bass (no length limit) Exceptions apply at Caddo Lake, Sabine River and Toledo Bend reservoir where the limit is 25 bass per day.

Maine

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – unlimited bass if fishing in North region only (South region – 2 bass with a 14” max length)

These can include bigmouth and smallmouth bass

  • Striped bass – unlimited bass from December 1- April 30 only

Maryland

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (up to 12” max length) March 1 to June 15, and is closed for fishing. They allow catch and release for ethical sports fishing. For bigmouth and smallmouth bass.
  • Striped and hybrid striped – 2 bass (with one being over 30” may length)
  • Rock bass or redeye – 15 bass (no size limit)

Massachusetts

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (minimum 15” max length) Only from May 18- Sept. 8
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (can be between 28-35” in total length)

Michigan

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (up to 14” max length) Starts from 3rd Sat. of June to November 30. The rest of the year is caught and released only.

Minnesota

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 6 bass (in the northeast zone only) Must have a combined mix of both largemouth and smallmouth bass. The rest of the state is catching and releasing only.
  • Rock bass – 30 bass (no length limit)
  • White bass – 30 bass (no length limit)

Mississippi

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bigmouth and smallmouth bass – 10 bass (no length limit) Must be in combination
  • Striped and hybrid bass – 6 bass (up to 15” minimum)

Missouri

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 10 bass (no length limit) Needs to be combined with both amounts of bigmouth and smallmouth bass.
  • Striped or hybrid striped – 6 bass (with a 15” max length)

Montana

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bass – 5 bass (up to 22” max length) Season starts 3rd Saturday in May until June 30

Nebraska

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (depending on where you fish the length will range from 12-21” for max length on only one fish out of 5)
  • Striped, white, or wiper bass – 3 bass (up to 16” in max length) Only found at Willow Creek Reservoir, Elwood Reservoir, and Wagon Train reservoir.

Statewide bag limits only allow 16” max length on striped bass from inland waters with a limit of 15 bass per person.

Nevada

The daily limit of bass fish per person

Black bass

Eastern region – 10 bass per county

Southeast region – 10 bass per county

Western region

  • Black bass – 5 bass per county (minimum 14” total length)
  • White or white hybrid – 15 bass (but must be under the 15” limit for length)

New Hampshire

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 2 bass (minimum 14” length) Only one of the bass can be over 14”. These include bigmouth and smallmouth bass. May 15 – June 30 is catch and release only.

New Jersey

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bigmouth bass – 5 bass (must have a 12” minimum within a mixed group) At least one of 5 needs to be 12” of the five
  • Smallmouth bass – 2 bass (minimum of 15” combined) One must be at least 15” of the two
  • Striped bass – 1 and 1 bass (one bass needs to be 28” exactly or the other bass needs to be 43”)
  • Hybrid striped bass – 2 bass (up to 16” minimum)
  • Rock bass – 25 bass (no minimum size but must be mixed with white perch, sunfish, and white catfish)

New Mexico

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (No size limits)
  • White bass – 25 bass (No size limits)
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (No size limits)

New York

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (minimum 12” length) One of 5 can be over 12”. From Dec 1 – June 3 this is catch and release only. Bigmouth and smallmouth bass only
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (must be between 18-28” in length or one fish larger than 40”)

North Carolina

  • Black bass – 15 bass (minimum up to 12.5” in length)

North Dakota

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • White bass – 20 bass
  • Bigmouth bass – 3 bass (must be in combo with smallmouth catches)
  • Smallmouth bass – 3 bass (must be in combo with bigmouth catches)

Ohio

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black and spotted bass – 5 bass (minimum 12” in mixed combo with others in this group)
  • Striped, hybrid stripes, and white bass – 30 bass (must have no more than 4 with 15” in length)

Oklahoma

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 6 bass (with a 14” minimum length) Ca be either bigmouth or smallmouth bass
  • Striped bass hybrids – 20 bass (must contain 5 fish with a minimum of 20”)

Oregon

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 3 bass (must be 15” minimum in length)
  • Striped bass – no limit on size or number of bass caught

Pennsylvania

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 0 bass kept (catch and release only)
  • Striped and hybrid white bass – 2 bass (up to 20” minimum length) Must catch both breeds

Rhode Island

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (must be minimum 12” length)
  • Striped bass – 1 bass (must be up to 28” minimum length)

South Carolina

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 5 bass (no limit) Must be combined with four other bass varieties.
  • Smallmouth bass – 5 bass (no more than 12” minimum) Must be combined with four other bass varieties.
  • Redeye bass – 10 bass (any length) Must be combined with four other bass varieties.
  • Spotted bass – 15 bass (any length) Must be combined with four other bass varieties.
  • Striped, white, or hybrid bass – 10 bass (Oct 1- June 15 Striped bass must be 26” minimum) Exception apply for striped bass throughout the state for length minimums.

South Dakota

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 5 bass (up to 20” minimum)
  • Smallmouth bass – 5 bass (up to 18” minimum)
  • White bass – no limit on bass (up to 17” minimum)

Tennessee

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Black bass – 5 bass (no length limit) Must require a mixed catch of bigmouth, smallmouth, spotted, and Coosa bass
  • Rock bass, redeye, or shadow bass – 20 bass (no length limit)
  • Striped or hybrid striped bass – 2 bass (up to 15” length) Must be both or paired
  • White bass – 15 bass (no length limit)

Texas

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 5 bass (up to 14” length)
  • Smallmouth bass – 5 bass (up to 14” length)
  • Spotted, Guadalupe and Alabama bass – 5 bass (no length limit) Must be in combination together of this group.
  • Striped and hybrid striped bass – 5 bass (up to 18” length)
  • White bass – 25 bass (up to 10” length)
  • Yellow bass – No limit to length or number of bass

For ocean fishing in Texas, the rules are different than freshwater fishing

  • Bass – 5 bass (up to 18” length) Can be any variety from the bass family in that 5 caught.

Utah

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bigmouth bass – 6 bass (no length limit)
  • Smallmouth bass – 6 bass (no length limit)
  • Striped bass – no bass limit
  • White bass – no bass limit
  • Wiper – 6 bass (no length limit)

Vermont

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth and smallmouth bass – 5 bass (no length limits) Starts from 2nd Saturday in April – Oct. 31. From Dec 1 to the 2nd Saturday in June is catch and release fishing only.

Virginia

The daily limit of bass fish per person

Lakes

Bass fish including bigmouth, smallmouth, or spotted are 1 to 2 bass fish per day ranging from 12-15″ minimum length.

Rivers

Bass fish including bigmouth, smallmouth, or spotted are 1 to 2 bass fish per day ranging from 11-20″ minimum length.

Reservoirs and tributaries

Striped bass and striped bass hybrids that are landlocked are 2-4 bass per day ranging from June to November fishing seasons. Some require mixing with most having no length limit.

Coastal

  • Striped bass less than 18” between 2 bass caught per day
  • White bass – 5 bass (no length limit)
  • Rock bass and redeye: 25-50 bass (no length limit) Depending on the region
  • Roanoke Bass – 25 bass (no length limit)

Washington

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth bass – 5 bass (up to 17” minimum) One can be over 17” is all others are under that length.
  • Smallmouth bass – 10 bass (up to 14” minimum) One can also be over 14” if all the others are under that length.

West Virginia

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Striped bass – 2 bass (up to 26” minimum) June 1- Sept. 30 possession is prohibited except for the lower Savannah River region.
  • White, hybrid, and combination bass – 2 bass (up to 27”) only along the lower reach of the Savannah River.

Wisconsin

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Bigmouth or smallmouth bass – 5 bass (no length limit)
  • Rock, white, and yellow bass – no bass limit

Wyoming

The daily limit of bass fish per person

  • Largemouth and smallmouth bass – 6 bass (no length limit) Must be in combination
